Jones searching for groove

BUDERIM'S Nic Jones will trade his longboard for a shortboard at the Chiko Sunshine Coast Pro this weekend as he attempts to reverse some recent poor results on the latter.

Jones, who is in the midst of trying to qualify for the 2012 ASP Longboard World Tour, performed poorly at back-to-back ASP Pro Junior events in Tahiti this month and is keen to rediscover his shortboard groove at the three-star $6000 Coast event.

Fresh from carving up a "pumping" lefthander at Alexandra Headland yesterday, the 17-year-old said his poor results at the Rangiroa Pro Junior and Tahiti Nui Pro Junior were not indicative of the gains he had made on the shortboard this year.

He was eliminated in the round of 32 at both events.

Having finished Year 12 last season, Jones can basically concentrate fulltime on improving his surfing.

"I hope I can at least make the semi-finals (this weekend) but there are some great people coming," he said.

"Every heat is a hard heat … I haven't (had good shortboard results) this year. Hopefully they'll be one coming this weekend."

The Coast stop on the four-round Chiko series is expected to be staged at Coolum.

Leading Coast surfers scheduled to appear include Kai Hing, Jack Duggan, Josh Sherwell, Jake Colreavy and Kelly Norris.

Jones intends to contest one more Longboard Qualifying Series event - at Perth in July.

If that event remains one star, he said he only had to show up to secure a World Tour spot.
