Semi-trailer destroyed in highway fire

THE Pacific Highway was closed for more than an hour last night as firefighters battled a blaze which destroyed a semi-trailer.

Police said the the vehicle was travelling towards Grafton when its rear tyres blew about 7.15pm.

The driver continued slowly for about two kilometres in an attempt to bring it to a stop in a a safe place, but was forced to exit the vehicle when smoke began to fill the driver's cabin.

A Rural Fire Service team from Glenugie attempted to save the semi-trailer but both the prime mover and front trailer were destroyed in the fire.

The driver of the vehicle was transferred to Grafton Base Hospital where he was treated for minor smoke inhalation.
