Senden hoping it’s horses for courses in FedEx cup playoffs

HE MIGHT be on the brink of being eliminated from the FedEx Cup playoffs, but his record at TPC Boston suggests John Senden has a great chance of staying alive in the series.

One of five Aussies still in contention for the $A14 million bonus that goes to the leading point-scorer at the end of the four-tournament series, Senden (pictured) is at No.81 ahead of the Deutsche Bank Championship starting tonight.

With just the top 70 players going on to the third event, the BMW Championship at Conway Farms Golf Club in Illinois in two weeks, the Queenslander needs a top-15 finish in Boston.

And while he has been outside the top 40 on his last four starts on the PGA Tour, Senden has finished inside the top 12 four times in his last five visits to TPC Boston. Those results include finishing in the top five last year when he led the field in greens in regulation, and scoring on the par-threes.

The four other Australians in the field are all likely to make it through to the BMW Championship, regardless of how they fare in Boston.

Jason Day jumped to the top of the standings after winning The Barclays last weekend, with countrymen Steven Bowditch (20), Matt Jones (57) and Marc Leishman (61) all alive.

Day will again play alongside Americans Jordan Spieth (2) and Bubba Watson (3) in the first two rounds of the Deutsche Bank.

Spieth lost his world No.1 ranking after missing the cut last week, the two-time major winner shooting rounds of 74, 73 after switching to yet-to-be-released Titleist 716 AP2 irons.
