The Gulmarrad Possums shine at netters competition

THE Gulmarrad Possums have hung up their pink dresses for another season, but not without a wealth of new skills to show for it.

The girls had their final three games on Saturday, followed by a presentation which saw everyone take home a trophy.

Coach Leanne Campbell said the netters competition was all about teaching the girls skills, with less focus on the scoreboard.

"The girls have come a really long way since the start of the year, and they've all learnt a lot of skills," Campbell said.

"Some of them will go on to play in the older divisions next year and some of the younger ones will do netters again."

The club started last year with just two teams, and this year had five.

"So at the rate we're going we should see even more next year," Campbell said.

Some standouts from the Possums include all-rounder Shakira Campbell who has already nominated for older representative teams.

"She has older sisters who have played netball so she clicked with it straight away and will definitely go far if she sticks with it," Campbell said.

"And Mackenzie Howell started with us this year and is a really athletic girl who is keen for another run next year."

The Possums will have a major fundraiser on August 29 at the Maclean Hotel to raise money for new uniforms.

It is musical bingo and kicks off at 6pm with plenty of raffles up for grabs. Tickets are $10 and available from the Maclean Hotel or the netball club.

To join the netters competition, phone Leanne Campbell on 0459 565 849.

In the higher grades of the Lower Clarence Netball Association competition, semi-finals kick off this weekend.

In division 1, Just Breakers take on Maclean Bottom Pub at 2.30pm.
