Shoplifters caught red-handed in Grafton

SEVERAL people have been arrested for shoplifting during an undercover police operation at Grafton Shoppingworld.

According to Grafton duty officer Inspector Jo Reid, last week's operation was carried out due to retail theft being a growing problem in the area.

"On Thursday, in conjunction with centre management and loss prevention officers, police in plain clothes identified offenders and were able to intercept them," she said.

"This is when we see a spike in retail theft, as boredom takes over and Christmas gets closer."

Inspector Reid added that the majority of offenders caught last week were juveniles.

A number of people who have been banned from Shoppingworld were also identified and arrested for trespassing.

One Grafton man, banned from the centre until 2022, is expected to be charged after running from police.

"It was a successful operation and we will be conducting more of them using plain clothes police over the holiday period," Insp Reid said.
