Editorial - Thursday, December 12: Show us the holidays

HERE'S hoping the State Government is not having a mental holiday when it considers Clarence Valley Council's request to return Maclean Show Day and Jacaranda Thursday to half-day holidays.

The people of the Valley have spoken emphatically that they didn't like this year's event day trial and want to go back to the holiday format.

Businesses impacted by extra holiday-pay headaches may not agree with the vote of both those who sent submissions to the council, and of the councillors themselves, but they are likely to benefit from a happy populace prepared to splash more cash on the big days.

And if the State Government doesn't accept the view of the people and the council then it deserves to be hit with a whole Jaca Thursday's worth of flour bombs, or strapped into a Maclean sideshow ride for hours on end.

Sure, the Valley's four half-day holidays may be seen as excessive through the eyes of economic rationalists but the local population and its representatives have said that is what they want and they deserve to have their opinion respected and agreed to.
