Sick baby no excuse as mum jailed

A REPEAT disqualified driver has been jailed despite telling the court she only drove because her baby daughter turned blue and she had to take her to hospital.

South Grafton woman Simone Gentles, 31, was on a suspended sentence for disqualified driving when caught driving illegally near her home in February.

Her solicitor, Robert Thompson, told Grafton Local Court that Gentles was driving her seven-month-old baby to the hospital when stopped by police.

Pleading for a lenient sentence, Mr Thompson said Gentles became concerned when the baby stopped breathing and started turning blue.

He said despite knowing she was not allowed to drive, Gentles took the risk and drove her baby to seek medical attention.

However, the police report told a very different story.

Police said Gentles told them after she was stopped that she was driving because she 'had to get to the shops'.

Magistrate Kim Pogson said Gentles had continued to flout the law and he had no choice but to jail her.

“You can't keep doing what you want to do,” he told her.

Gentles was sentenced to six months' jail and disqualified from holding a licence until 2014.
