Simmons shines with the bat as Harwood take spoils

HARWOOD V LAWRENCE: Harwood stalwart Geoff Simmons fell agonisingly short of the first century of the 2016/17 Maclean Bowling Club Lower Clarence First Grade season as the side managed to defend a dogged 9-175 total Barry Watts Oval.

Simmons - who almost carried his bat through the innings - was out for 99 as the last man out when he fell to the Harrison brothers with Simon snaring the catch off Dylan's bowling.

The veteran opener was one of very few shining lights for the Harwood batting line-up as the top order struggled to fire around him before captain Matt Peterie (21) managed to stay at the crease to post a 69-run 7th wicket stand with Simmons.

Seamer Brodie Davis (3 for 24 off 8) was the pick of the bowlers for Lawrence as he worked in tandem with young tweaker Hayden Ensbey (1 for 31 off 8) on a tough deck for scoring.

The 175-run total, which was about on par for the ground, proved to be enough for the Harwood side as they bowled Lawrence out 28 runs short in the 31st over.

It was panic stations for Lawrence from the first over as they lost opener Tom Gerrard for a duck and Ryan Watterson (2) not long after.

The Lawrence leadership team of captain Luke Moloney (51) and Adrian Giffin (28) put up a strong fight through the middle overs with a determined 64-run fourth wicket stand, but it was brought undone as former Lawrence junior Mitch Neimic (2 for 24 off 7) removed the pair as the Lawrence side passed the century mark.

Harwood young gun Tom Littlechild made short work of the Lawrence tail as he brought up his first five-wicket haul of the season taking 5 for 28 off 7.3 overs.
