Mystery of woman who emerged from river at South Grafton

2.45PM: "HELP me, help me," were the only words a woman who staggered wet and muddy into a South Grafton restaurant last night could utter.

South Grafton resident Leanne Snowden said she had arrived at the Golden Palace Restaurant, in the Walkers Marina Hotel building, at about 6.40pm to pick up some takeaway when the woman staggered into the restaurant.   Ms Snowden said the woman of medium build, possibly in her late 40s, was totally covered in mud and was extremely cold.

"The only thing she could say was "help me, help me," Ms Snowden said.

"She was totally covered in mud and could hardly speak. You could hardly tell what colour she was or her hair. We put her in front of the fire and got her some blankets."

"We sat with her and called the police."

Ms Snowden said the woman was there for about 10 minutes before the police arrived and took her away.

"It seemed she somehow slipped in the water," she said.

"No-one saw her or how she got to the river, only when she came back."

Ms Snowden said around 7.50pm the woman's car, which was parked outside the hotel, was loaded onto a truck and taken away by police.

"The car looked like a dark blue Honda, or Commodore," she said.

Hotel owner Margaret McKenna said police had contacted her last night to get CCTV footage from the hotel's camera.

"We have cameras recording the street view outside the pub 24 hours a day," Ms McKenna said.

Police cordoned off the area yesterday and uniformed officers and detectives swept the area.

12.45PM: THE wharf at South Grafton's Skinner St has been taped off.

The Daily Examiner has reporters at the scene at the minute trying to gather further details.

More information as it comes to hand.
