Slipper could end up in prison with murderers

PETER Slipper may end up in the same prison as murderers and rapists if he is sent to jail on September 22.

The former House of Representatives Speaker and Member for Fisher is awaiting sentencing after being found guilty on Monday, in the ACT Magistrates Court, of defrauding the Commonwealth Government of about $900.

If the maximum one-year jail term was handed down, Mr Slipper would most likely be sent to the ACT's Alexander Maconochie Centre - a far cry from his comfortable Buderim home and tasteful art collection.

A Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman told the Daily the AMC catered for "remand and sentenced prisoners, male and female prisoners and prisoners of all security - minimum, medium and maximum".

"There are separate male and female campuses within the AMC and prisoners are broadly separated on the basis of their security and category classification.

"A typical day at the AMC will be quite similar to prisons in other jurisdictions," the spokeswoman said.

"Prisoners are locked down at night-time. In the morning they are released from cells or cottage accommodation to undertake work, education and programs.

"They are provided with three meals a day."

A report in other media in June showcased the "autumn menu" at the AMC and revealed prisoners would get dessert only four days a week to help them watch their waistlines.

Breakfast was "continental" and lunch included corned beef sandwiches.

Dinner highlights included "Tuscan pork belly" and dessert ranged from tapioca to yoghurt and mud cake.

Mr Slipper would be allowed visitors five days a week.

"The AMC has quite generous visitor arrangements and visits are available across five days each week."
