Crocodile Dumb-Dee tries to smuggle baby saltie
WE MAY finally have an answer to how the Mary River crocodile got into our waters - could he or his predecessors have been smuggled here?
A man caught trying to take a baby saltie on an airplane has shown just how far some people will go when they decide they want a new pet.
But this is a far cry from a child begging their mum to keep that puppy which mysteriously "followed them home".
It's just cruel to jam a wild animal in your boot and smuggle it on a plane, even if it is a reptile.
And what on earth was he going to do with it when it started to grow?
A 1000kg crocodile isn't exactly going to fit in your backyard pool.
He wouldn't have been left with many choices.
Either the croc would have died through being in an entirely unsuitable environment, or he would have to release it into the wild.
There's a strong argument that crocodiles have been in the Mary River for decades or even longer, but even if that is the case, there's really no need to add another one.
Even if it was just a spur-of-the-moment, dumb decision, this man's poor treatment of the croc really raises the question: who's the cold-hearted one here?
