Smyths defence too strong

CITY Smyths defeated Tucabia Opals 36-18 in the Grafton Netball A-grade match of the day.

City took control of the game from the start with a number of unanswered goals from Tania Ditton and Heidi Dalton.

Tucabia's shooters fought hard to get the ball to the ring, but City's Tahlia Goodwin and Kelly Smyth minimised their attempts.

The score at half-time had City leading 17-5.

As the third quarter began, Tucabia's Jay Stoker seized many intercepts to move the ball back to her shooters but the City defence remained strong.

Ashley King took many great leaps of faith and was able to secure a number of fantastic intercepts.

In the end the massive lead attained by City was too great for the Opals to rein in.

In A reserve grade, the game between Spinifex and GHS began as a really tight match with each team starting strongly.

The teams went goal for goal with opposing centres, Spinifex's Tahlia Rose and GHS's Emily Hansel, continually needing to run from end to end.

The first quarter finished with Spinifex ahead 8-6.

At the start of the second quarter Spinifex sprang into action with five quick goals, surprising the opposition.

The accurate shooting of Spinifex's Allura Paterson and Carol Simmons meant GHS were punished for every mistake they made.

At half-time Spinifex dominated the score line 19-8.

With a couple of their key players missing, GHS struggled to keep up with the dominance of Spinifex throughout the game.

GHS's Breanna Austin took a number of intercepts, almost plucking the ball out of the air, to give her own shooters a chance to score.

Unfortunately Spinifex's Ashleigh O'Donohue and Kerrie Donovan did not make it easy in the goal circle for GHS shooters Sam Flynn and Sam Brown to score.

By last quarter Spinifex were making GHS pay for every mistake they made.

GHS never gave up fighting but in the end the game was won 37-10 y a dominant Spinifex team.
