Snack bar faces chop at Yamba

OWNERS of Smoko’s Snack Bar in the Yamba industrial estate, Cate Murphy and Rod West, fear ‘dire consequences’ for their small business from a McDonald’s restaurant proposed in Treelands Drive.

An application to build the 24/7 McDonald’s has been submitted to Clarence Valley Council.

“As we are located in the industrial estate we do not benefit from the holiday influx of tourists,” Ms Murphy said yesterday.

“We are reliant on the customer base that we already have, including workers in the industrial estate, visiting trade people and truck drivers.”

Ms Murphy said in the year the duo had own Smoko’s they had forfeited profit to establish a reputable name for the business.

“The industrial estate in Yamba is the bottom line, the foundation of Yamba and the workers here quite literally make Yamba,” she said.

“We have done the sums and we know that if we lose five per cent of our customers to McDonald’s – we go under.

“McDonald’s would take our truck drivers who have previously found Smoko’s to be the most convenient place to park, and they would take a lot of our 6am going-to-work trade.”

According to Ms Murphy, theirs is not the only business set to suffer.

“If we are forced to close it will mean that we will not be spending dollars on local services and supplies around the Valley,” she said.

On average the business spends around $850 each week on local produce from other small businesses, and donates to local charities.

Corporate communications manager of McDonald’s Australia Amy Lawrence said the mega fast-food outlet was aware of the concerns held by some community members.

“We’re obviously aware of the debate surrounding our development application and on completion of the council’s notification period, we together with the franchisee proposed for the restaurant, will review any and all community feedback before working with the council to address any issues,” she said.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said they were in the final stages of the licensing decision and also confirmed the franchisee for the proposed restaurant would be from the region.
