WHEN Robert McIntyre and his "caddies" finish modifying their golf buggy, they are planning to turn the highways between Rockhampton and Killarney into fairways.

Robert, 65, and his pals - Larry Riley and Kerry Barnes - are shifting their sticks into forward to conquer the main and back roads between Rockhampton and Killarney on a nine-and-a-half horsepower golf buggy.

The Mt Morgan man's motivation is to raise money for Camp Quality. He says he wants to help others because he has some disabilities of his own.

Plus, he said he wanted to do something like this "before I putt out".

Their intrepid journey will start in Rockhampton before heading to Gracemere, Mt Morgan, Dululu, Wowan, Baralaba, Moura, Theodore, Cracow, Eidsvold, Munduberra, Durong, Jandowae, Jimbour, Dalby, Cecil Plains, Millmerran, Leyburn, Warwick and Killarney.

They will stop over in those places on their 795km drive, which they predict will take eight days to complete.

Hamilton Island Resort supplied the buggy and Toll Mining will provide a mine-spec 4WD dual cab ute to escort the vehicle to Killarney.

Where possible, the buggy and ute will keep to the road verge to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.

Morning starts will be at first light.

Their daily travel distance is calculated to be between 90km and 140km.

The crusade will take place in September or October this year.

Rob wanted support from Rockhampton businesses in his bid to raise more than $20,000 for Camp Quality Central Queensland.

"We want to try to raise about $20 for each kilometre we travel... any help we can get will be much appreciated," he said.

Toll Mining has offered to supply petrol for the trip.

Anyone who wants to support Rob and his friends can contact The Morning Bulletin on 4930 4283.

Power to the pedal

  • A nine-and-a-half horse power golf buggy roughly has a 200cc motor
  • That's a 10L tank, which one Rockhampton small engine's experts says will get you a few hundred kilometres
  • The buggies do have high revs.
