South Grafton High through to round of 16

The visitors arrived late and while they took their time to find their feet the hosts hit the ground running to pile on 22 unanswered points in the opening 15 minutes.

Wauchope soon responded, however, with two tries both on the back of kicks from Will Baker. The creative fullback got the better of his opposite number Tom McGrady on several occasions.

However, the highly rated McGrady made up for earlier mistakes to have the last laugh with a try just before half-time and two in the second half as South Grafton regained control of the match.

It was improved performance from South Grafton after an error-riddled 32-20 win against Grafton High in round two of the DEX Shield on Monday night. Mason Graham provided solid defence around the ruck while Brandon Thornton was one of the backrowers to stand up.

Five-eighth Nick McGrady had a quiet game but was involved in an impressive passage down the right which saw Kane Shorrock score a deserved try on the wing. He and centre Jordan Child were forced into some important defensive plays on Wauchope's big, powerful centre.

Meanwhile Maclean High takes on Kingscliff High in the North Coast A final at Kingscliff this Monday.

Then on Wednesday night at 7.30pm South Grafton and Maclean fight it out for the 2015 DEX Shield at McKittrick Park.

SOUTH GRAFTON HS 44 (Tom McGrady 3, Brandon Thornton, James Hughes, Elliott Cooper, Nick McGrady, Kane Shorrock tries; Tom McGrady 4, Nick McGrady, Dane O'Connor goals) defeated WAUCHOPE HS 20 (Jarrod Hollis 2, Will Baker, Dean Hollis tries; Baker 2 goals) at McKittrick Park.
