Sparkies urge Turnbull to finish the NBN using power poles

SPARKIES have urged Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull to consider building the remaining National Broadband Network above ground on existing power poles.

The Electrical Trades Union urged Mr Turnbull to consider rolling out the remainder of the NBN above ground to help save costs.

ETU NBN construction coordinator David Mier said in a statement building it above ground could allow delivery of fibre optic cables direct to homes, rather than nodes at the end of the street.

He called on Mr Turnbull to ensure the option was part of the strategic review currently underway, while the broad remit of the review will likely include it among options considered.

Mr Mier said the overhead option was already proven at a South Australian test site and in Tasmania.
