Speed's Ghosts to deliver respect

ONE WORD - respect.

Grafton Ghosts’ first grade coach Col Speed and his players learnt a valuable lesson against Evans Head in round 1 of the pre-season Charity Shield: Show more respect to the opposition.

After their hard-fought 24-16 win over Evans Speed said the main focus to take out of the game was not take opposition sides lightly

“We played pretty well against Evans but failed to give them any respect. We learnt a lesson which is not to underestimate sides,” he said

The Ghosts are at home to the Kyogle Turkeys today and will be eager to rack up plenty of points in a bid to host the final on April 18.

Two teams, the Ghosts and the Grafton Rhinos are still in the hunt for a finals berth but will need to pile on the points to increase their overall aggregate.

Kyogle remain on top of the table in the Southern Division after disposing of Casino in round 1 but it’s hard to see them defeating a Ghosts side saturated with class players.

Speed said at this stage Kyogle are an unknown quantity and indicated his players will be focused on their own game and working on combinations in a lead up to May 2 when the Northern Rivers Regional Rugby League competition gets under way.

“I’m not sure what Kyogle will have or who Don Walker has got in his run on side. We’re more worried about our own backyard,” Speed said

“There were a few areas we needed to work on after the game against Evans and we realise we need to score plenty of points to boost our for and against...it would be good for the club to be able to host the final.”

In an interesting move for the game against Kyogle new signing Anthony Don has been named at fullback with last season’s custodian Khan Williams joining Aaron Hartmann in the centres. From all reports Don is an excitement machine at the back with blistering pace and a high level of skill.

Welsh signing Thomas Burnell gets his chance in the run-on side at hooker with Rhys Walters named on the bench in a strong top squad.
