Spinners take spoils as Clarence River clinch shield

JNR CRICKET: Clarence River under-16 representative side has continued its run of good form with a comprehensive victory over Lower Clarence in the annual Under-16 Cotten Shield curtain raiser.

The win follows the side's historic North Coast Cricket Council Interdistrict title.

Playing in a T20 format at McKittrick Park, Clarence River strangled the Lower batting order with tight lines and intelligent bowling changes from captain Jackson Grieve. It was Grieve's decision to bowl first that proved the match-winning moment with Clarence River making full use of an up and down wicket.

Woodford Island Warriors opener Blake Ryan was the only shining light in a bleak batting effort from Lower Clarence, scoring 39 of the side's 61-run total.

It was the Clarence River spin duo of left-armer Hayden Ensbey (4 for 3 off 3) and leg-spinner Jackson Grieve (3 for 5 off 4) that tore the Lower batting order to shreds as they utilised a full repertoire of deliveries.

It was not all smooth sailing for the Clarence River side in the run chase as Lower's tenacity in the field sent batsmen packing.

A sturdy knock from all-rounder Aidan Cahill (23) guided Clarence to a five-wicket victory in the 15th over.

Maclean United speedster Dylan Clark (2 for 14 off 3) was the pick of the attack.
