Standout student achievers do their school proud

THE sporting achievements of McAuley Catholic College were far reaching in 2013. One of the standouts was hockey player Ashlee Danvers.

The Year 11 student was rewarded with New South Wales Combined Catholic Colleges selection after another year of outstanding performances representing NSW All Schools Under-16 Girls in 2012.

She was an integral part of the McAuley team that won the Grafton Women's Hockey A Grade competition, primarily made up of students from the school.

Outside school, Ashlee played at the National Under-18 Hockey Championships as part of the Northern Territory team after being a shadow reserve for NSW.

"It was a great experience and valuable just to see the level of 18s nationals," said Ashlee, who will be eligible to trial for under-18s again in February.

"It's been a pretty good year. We have lots of strong hockey players at McAuley."

Ebony Herden, Justin Donoghue, Simon Colgrave and Harrison Smith, who all graduated Year 12 this year, were also named in NSW CCC Open Hockey teams, while Murphy Thompson, Rugby Hackett, Tiahnee Cropper and Haylee Gough represented NSW CCC in Under-16 Girls. Thomas Dougherty was named best and fairest of Grafton Men's A Grade Hockey.

Sam and Zac Young displayed all-round sporting talent. Sam, in Year 8, and Zac, Year 7, both competed at state level or higher for hockey, swimming and lifesaving.

Thomas Morgan excelled at equestrian, fifth at National Team Penning.

Mitchell Christiansen and James Bertalli progressed all the way to New South Wales All Schools for athletics.
