Stephen Gageler new Solicitor-General

ATTORNEY-GENERAL Nicola Roxon has appointed the first Solicitor-General in more than 40 years to the High Court bench.

Stephen Gageler SC will take on the role in October.

Mr Gageler was selected after an extended consultation process which included leaders of the law profession, every state Attorney-General, the Federal Opposition and the full bench of the High Court among other groups.

Since graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1982, Mr Gageler has had a distinguished career in both the private and public sectors, including serving as Associate to Sir Anthony Mason QC when he was a High Court Justice.

Ms Roxon said despite a long selection process of high quality candidates, Mr Gageler's reputation as a man of "enormous integrity" sealed his role.

He will take on the role following the routine retirement of Justice William Gummow in October, who has served on the bench for 17 years.
