Carter talks highly of Gould

PREMIERSHIP-winning Penrith Panthers five-eighth from 1991 Steve Carter believes the club should consider a long-term plan and not a quick fix when hiring Phil Gould as a coaching director.

Gould will officially take the reins as early as Monday and his first tasks will include finding a new coach to replace Matt Elliott and assist with negotiations of numerous players coming off contract this season.

Carter, who now lives in Pearces Creek, played under Gould in the 1991 grand final.

“He has the smartest rugby league mind and is the best coach I ever had,” Carter said.

“But when you look at his coaching history, he hasn’t stayed at any club for a great length of time.

“I think the Panthers have been on a gradual downward slope since winning the grand final in 2003.

“Gus (Gould) prides himself on consistency and I think if they can keep him at the club beyond this season, they will get the results.”

The role involves Gould overseeing the head coach.

“These coaching director positions seem to be the new trend,” Carter said.

“When he (Gould) coached us, he was his own boss and he liked it that way.

“I don’t know if a coach in the NRL would like to have someone looking over their shoulder. I know Gus wouldn’t.

“But with him there, it might be a chance to blood someone new to take over in 2012.

“Nathan Brown probably deserves another chance, if that’s the direction they want to go.

“He was thrown in way too early at the Dragons and I hope to see him coach in the NRL again,” Carter said.

“I think the Panthers assistant coach Steve Georgallis would probably be the best option though.

“He knows the systems and the players already.

“You don’t want to change the landscape too much.”
