Stockman's Challenge big drawcard
BIG River Campdraft Club will hold its annual Hotel Motel 5 Stockman's Challenge at Hawthorne Park this weekend.
Club secretary Karen McLennan said the event was "well patronised", with entrants coming from all over to compete.
"We have entries from the Armidale and Glen Innes districts, one competitor travelling from the Northern Territory as well as many locals," McLennan said.
The challenge will be contested in three classes, with a junior horse (under-6), senior horse (six and over), and junior rider (under-17) competition.
"Last year we ran only an open class so we thought we'd mix it up a little this year and see what format is preferred," McLennan said.
"Many of the people from last year have come back so it's really positive."
The current number of entrants stands at 40, but McLennan is hoping for more.
"We'd love to get more entries and hopefully all of the equestrian riders in the region can get involved.
"It's not a professional event, but we're hoping to encourage children to have a go."
The Bushman's Challenge will be held in the main arena, an event McLennan said was "open to anyone."
"It's made up of 10 different elements that utilise the skills used in a bushman's working day," she said.
"Competitors will be judged on how neatly they complete the tasks, with bonus points awarded for quicker speeds."
Spectators are welcome.
Entry is free.
