Storm wreaked havoc across Boambee Valley

THE roar was deafening according to residents who emerged from their homes to find their streets had copped the brunt of Monday's powerful thunderstorm.

Under 80kmh wind gusts two large swamp mahoganies fell over Anthony Dam's Boambee East house.

As hail the size of golfballs pelted down, creeks and rivers rose and the coast copped deafening thunder and damaging lightning strikes, more than 50mm of rain fell in the hour-and-a-half to 5pm.

The corridor of damage stretched through the Boambee Valley, across Toormina and Sawtell.

Helmut Schiretz thought his vehicle was out of harm's way in the carport of his Toormina home, yet the strength of the wind blew hailstones at such an angle the rear window of his car was smashed.

The Coffs Harbour SES has responded to 88 call-outs patching up hail damaged skylights and windows, sawing through fallen trees and fixing leaking roofs.
