Thunderstorms, strange weather forecast for Capricornia

THUNDERSTORMS in August? You wouldn't read about it - until today.

In a strange occurrence for Central Queensland, a winter thunderstorm is forecast for Capricornia later this week.

Rockhampton Bureau of Meteorology technical officer Brendan Bradford said the storm was looming over the region and was expected to affect Capricornia tomorrow night and into Thursday morning.

"That's really quite strange for this time of the year," Mr Bradford said.

"For the boaties, there will be good conditions today before a strong wind warning comes into play on Wednesday with winds reaching 37-55km/hr."

Mr Bradford said over the next few days, overnight and daytime temperatures throughout Capricornia would start to rise before a final cool change over the weekend.

"We're actually expecting daytime temperatures of 28 and 29 today and tomorrow in CQ," he said.

"It's also going to be quite gusty today and tomorrow with north, north westerly winds.

"A slow moving change will come through CQ towards the end of the week and we'll see a return of cooler temperatures by Friday.

"After that we will see temperatures start to rise again with a warm change expected from August 17 onwards."

Mr Bradford said CQ would also feel the effects of El Nino conditions over the next few months.

"El Nino is strengthening in the Pacific and will continue to do so from now until the end of 2015," Mr Bradford said.

"In terms of rainfall, from now until the end of October it will be drier than normal."
