Students suffer adverse reaction to 'gel' in Morayfield

UPDATE: Students have suffered minor injuries after having an adverse reaction to a substance at  Morayfield State High School this afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the scene about 1pm.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said the patients were suffering burning sensations to their hands.

"We believe it was after handing some sort of object that burst and there was a substance within it," they said.

There were reports of 13 students being affected.

While earlier media reports said there had been an explosion, the school said in an update to parents on its Facebook page that was not the case.

A small number of students have come in contact with gel from inside a handball,'' the post said.

"An ambulance was called to provide medical assistance to the students.

"Students have a slight skin irritation. No students needed to go to the hospital.

"All students involved are fine and have been given medical clearance by ambulance staff.

"Students have returned to class. Despite media reports to the contrary there has been no explosion and no critical incident."
