STYLEwise: Brushing up on your technique

THE right hair brush can dramatically affect the condition of your scalp and your hair. It can also make or break your ability to style your hair the way you looked when you left the salon.

But with so many options, it's hard to know what actually works for your specific hair texture, length and style.

Last time I gave you the low down on how to blow-dry like a pro, this week I'm going to short list a few brushes to help you understand which model suits what hair type and performs which task.

Shift those knots

If your hair is wet then the answer is none. Hair is in its weakest state when it's wet and can tear easily, especially if fragile. No bristle brush is ever the right brush on wet hair, tangle teaser is the only way to go.

Create a little curl

If you want to get soft curls or waves without using a curling iron, use a round brush with a ventilated metal, thermal, or ionic barrel. These barrels efficiently trap and circulate heat when you blow-dry, reinforcing a shiny curl. The open ventilated design also cuts drying time in half.

We recommend - The BlueWave brushes from Bioionic, more on these amazing tools coming up in future editions.

Smooth and straighten

A flat, paddle brush is perfect for blow drying hair smooth, if you read my last column you will even know how. A flat paddle brush has a larger surface area designed to reach larger sections of your hair. Choose a good quality brush with a cushion back to give your head a great scalp massage while you are drying.

We recommend - any good quality paddle brush

Volume Up

The secret to achieving volume in a blow-dry can come from any of the above brushes if used correctly, and if you just remember one simple rule.

The heat from the dryer puts the style in place but the cool shot button is what sets it in place. Remember my jelly hint, hot water makes it, cold fridge sets it.

If you put the work into the root area, use the correct styling products (anti humidity spray is a must) and follow the golden rule of letting your hair cool in the shape you are looking for. Only then will volume and fullness be yours.

Products we recommend for volume - Joico Power Whip - Joico humidity blocker.

Happy brushing,
