Suicide Squad star to try out Aussie slang at Supernova

KAREN Fukuhara is still riding the wave of her breakthrough blockbuster film Suicide Squad.

The film starring an ensemble of DC Comics characters has grossed more than $465 million dollars since it hit cinemas in August.

It was Fukuhara's first feature film and she starred alongside Hollywood heavyweights Will Smith, Cara Delevingne, Jared Leto and Australia's own Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney.

"I didn't know what I was in for because when I auditioned I didn't know it was for Suicide Squad,” she tells APN.

"They were very secretive about it. Even during filming they made us sign non-disclosure agreements. The first time I saw the full dynamic of the whole thing was at San Diego at Comic Con. We were filming at night so we flew in from Toronto, we were on stage for 10 minutes, they showed the trailer and then we jetted out. Seeing the hall filled with all the fans who lined up for days just to get in to see us made me realise it was a lot bigger than I expected.”

Fukuhara played Katana, a samurai sword-wielding heroine who has appeared in various comic book series and TV shows.

"I see Katana cosplays all around. It's still so surreal to me that people dress up as me,” she says.

"In Portland a guy came up to me with a shirt that said 'Karen Fukuhara will you marry me?'

"I've been sent Katana drawings and gifts, but it makes it more special when there are fans who are not only fans of the character but also fans of mine. It's very touching to see them draw things and come up with art.

"It keeps me going because I am still auditioning. Sometimes the auditioning process can get a little bit disheartening when it's rejection after rejection, but then you can look back on the fan pictures.”

Fukuhara will meet her Australian fans this week during her first trip down under for the Supanova Pop Culture Expo.

She's keen to try out some Aussie slang she learned on the Suicide Squad set with Robbie and Courtney.

"I had so much fun hanging out with the two Aussies; bogan was a word we threw around,” she says.

"Margot and her assistant came up with my nickname. They told me the Aussies like to shorten things like names, so for Cara they gave her Capa and then they gave me Kavi. I quite like it.”

Warner Brothers is yet to confirm a Suicide Squad sequel, but if it goes ahead Fukuhara hopes to expand on more of her character's back story after several of her scenes were cut from the first film.

"A lot of my action scenes I worked so hard on were cut out, so hopefully they show snippets of that in the extended cut (DVD),” she says.

"It was my first film so it was all new to me. It was strange to spend weeks filming one scene and then you watch it and it's not in there... but at the end of the day David (Ayer, the director) and the studio make the calls and they know better than I do.”

The Supanova Pop Culture Expo runs from November 11 to 13 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.
