Super Typhoon Vongfong heading toward Japan
A SUPER typhoon, the strongest tropical cyclone of the year, is on course to make landfall in Japan over the weekend, meteorologists say.
Super Typhoon Vongfong is currently moving across the western Pacific, tracking slowly north-west and packing wind gusts of about 135 kilometres per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
Earlier this week the typhoon had "intensified explosively" to a category 5 storm with maximum winds of 265 km per hour, it said.
"Its strength is very much similar to Haiyan," a JMA meteorologist said.
Typhoon Haiyan left nearly 8,000 people dead or missing when it ripped through the Philippines last November, generating giant waves that swamped coastal communities.
