Surf club readying for day of fun in the sun
VOLLEYBALL: The sand has been scraped and the nets have been hoisted as Minnie Water-Wooli Surf Club gets set to host its annual Beach Volleyball Day.
Teams of five will take to the volleyball courts with plenty of prizes up for grabs this Saturday.
The annual event, which has graced the sand of Minnie Water for more than a decade, is the club's major fundraiser for the year and a drawcard for Clarence Valley holidaymakers.
Club secretary and event organiser Ali Derrick said it was a day that everyone at the club enjoyed.
"It is our favourite day on the calendar for sure,” she said. "It is just an awesome day in the sun and in the surf. We have lots of fun.
"Saturday looks like the perfect day for it as well. We try and run it when the tides are favourable because you can't play beach volleyball without the beach.”
While most of the competition is just for fun, Derrick said the fun day can bring out the competitive side of people.
The club has already received a few expressions of interest and expect a few regular teams to again return to the competition this year but said registrations won't open up until the day.
"Most of the people who come down for a game are visitors to the region looking for some fun,” she said.
"We have tried to spread our love a bit further a field this year and have had a few more people getting in touch to register their interest.”
Last season's A Grade champions Illaroo Crew were visiting the area in 2016 but Derrick said she expected them to return for glory this weekend.
"They said they wanted to come back and defend the crown, so I look forward to that,” she said. "We have two different divisions, A Grade and B Grade so there is something for everyone.”
The club will also draw its major raffle for the year at the event with more than $1300 in prizes up for grabs including the major prize of a $300 BCF gift voucher.
There will also be kids beach activities and a barbecue on the day.
