Surf’s up for Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup

SURFING star Sally Fitzgibbons has taken Red Bull Racing Australia drivers Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup off the track and in to the water for a surf lesson in the lead-up to the V8 Supercars Gold Coast 600 this weekend.

Having won the Burleigh Pro earlier in the year and ranked No 3 in the world, Fitzgibbons was well placed to teach the boys the lay of the water and get them mentally focused for the race ahead.

The trio hit the ocean with strong winds and a swell against them but still managed to emerge with a smile on their faces.

"It's never a bad day being out in the water and the sun is shining," Whincup said.

"We had the best teacher to give us all the tips.

"I won't be giving up my day job but it was definitely mentally soothing before the race."

On giving surfing a go, Lowndes said: "Sally was a great teacher. Just getting to see her out there, you can really appreciate her sport.

"It's a great profession for her and a great hobby for me."

"The boys both did such a great job," Fitzgibbons said.

"I was really impressed because they both have that 'give it a go' attitude.

"I'd love to get them in to some quality waves because today the winds were against us and the waves were sub-par but the boys still came out smiling."

The Gold Coast 600 will be held tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday.
