Surprise murder charge

BARRY GRANT, the man who disappeared at the same time as murdered man Jethro Matheson, has been charged with the man's killing.

Grant, who turned himself into police early this month, had been charged over the discovery in January of $3 million worth of cannabis at Condong.

Police had said they were concerned for Grant, who disappeared at the same time as Mr Matheson, whose body was later found near Kyogle.

However, Grant, 51, yesterday appeared at Grafton Local Court charged with Mr Matheson's murder.

Grant appeared calm in the dock during his brief appearance at the court, dressed in his prison greens. He did not apply for bail and the matter was dealt with quickly.

Detectives allege Grant and Mr Matheson were involved in cultivating a large cannabis crop at Condong.

Grant's charge list dates the alleged murder as happening on the night of the January 15 police raid on the Condong property.

Grant is also facing charges of cultivating a large commercial quantity of cannabis, supplying a prohibited plant, supplying a prohibited drug and with the possession of cannabis.

He is scheduled to appear on the murder charge at Lismore Local Court on May 4.
