IT'S always a pleasure to open a gift.

Uniting Care, along with local businesses, have taken this idea and grown it into a huge Christmas tree at Target in Park Beach Plaza.

On the tree, shoppers can share the spirit of the season by buying gifts for those in our community who need them and then leave them under the tree.

"We've been doing this for more years than I can count ... a long time," Uniting Care spokesperson Joan Howlett said.

"We pick up the presents from Target, check the parcels to make sure they're the right kind of toys, then we give it all to Burnside to give out to families."

All the gifts are donated to local families in need, including diners at Uniting Care's soup kitchen and their families.

"It's so much fun putting them all together," Joan said.

As well as toys, donations of food items by individuals and businesses such as Bishop Druitt College and Peter Dubois Smash Repairs means families will have some festive items for Christmas dinner.

"It just makes a big difference," Joan said.
