Tahlia takes on Kiwis in BMX
CLARENCE Valley rider Tahlia Marsh hid her fear as she faced her wide-eyed rivals when they performed the haka.
The 11-year-old didn't want to give her New Zealand opponents any psychological advantage ahead of the Mighty 11s Trans-Tasman Test.
"It was pretty scary," Tahlia said. "Their eyes really bulged, it got them really angry.
"We only sang our national anthem."
The Mighty 11s is a unique concept in the BMX world. The top four 11-year-olds from Australia compete against their New Zealand counterparts in a team event.
The riders contested five races at the Sunset Coast BMX track in northern New Zealand with 28 points on offer in each race. The winner receives 10 points for their team down to one point for eighth.
New Zealand won both the boys' and girls' divisions, with the girls going down by just nine points overall.
"Normal racing is individual, but in Mighty 11s you have certain instructions to follow and work as a team," Tahlia said. "You have to try to get two riders to the front and keep the other riders away."
Meanwhile, Tahlia's older brothers and fellow Clarence Valley BMX Club members Nick and Josh Marsh competed in the North Island BMX Championships at the same venue.
Nick made the semi-finals in his division while Josh rode away with the No.8 plate after reaching the final.
