Talented teen destined to go far in world of country music

CASSI Hilbers is a star on the rise.

The 13-year-old Sippy Downs musician already has many feathers in her cap and no doubt there are more to come.

Last weekend, competing against artists up to 16 years old, Cassi won the Ekka Country Music Showdown.

She was awarded the Troy Cassar-Daly Scholarship with the CMAA Academy of Country Music.

That means next year she will spend eight days being mentored by some of Australia's top country music artists, teachers and musicians, and perform at the graduation concert on the last evening.

"I am really excited," Cassi said. "It is such a great opportunity."

Cassi describes her sound as a mix between folk and country, and she loves spending her spare time writing songs.

She took up singing at the age of nine and a year later used the internet to teach herself how to play guitar.

The brunette beauty said her inspiration for songwriting came from what was happening in her life at the time.

Her role models include country musicians Amber Lawrence and Ashleigh Dallas.

"I really take inspiration from their music," she said.

The teen, who has played at the Caloundra Music Festival, the Urban Country Music Festival and the Gympie Muster, will be headed back to the muster again.

She will perform on the main stage on the Sunday, right after the Talent Search Grand Final, as one of last year's winners.

Cassi also has two other performances at the Muster, for the Music Makers Show (upcoming talent) and the Queensland Champion of Champions Showcase.

The Coast girl won the 2014 Junior Talent Search at just 12 years of age and as her prize received a recording package with Pacific International Music and a Fender Nashville Telecaster Deluxe electric guitar.

She has finished recording her EP - which contains four of her originals - and will release it at the end of the year.

Cassi, who is home-schooled, dreams of winning a Golden Guitar as well as touring around the nation.

"I play music every day," she said.

"I love to write songs as much as I can."

Cassi will also attend the Tamworth Country Music Festival next January and has already started booking gigs and performances.
