Taylor sacking 'a step backwards', says ex-Tigers coach

IN a stinging rebuke aimed at his former club, former Wests Tigers coach Mick Potter says the club's fed-up fans must be "shaking their heads" at the decision to sack Jason Taylor.

Potter, who was also dumped by the club after coaching Wests Tigers in 2013 and 2014, reckons the decision has set the embattled club back "another few years".

"It's a step backwards," said Potter, who questioned the club's lack of stability.

Potter, now an assistant coach with the Newcastle Knights, knows how it feels to be tossed out of Concord.

"The fans must be just shaking their heads, asking what is going on ... the instability of the organisation and how this sets them back another few years," Potter said.

"They would be very disappointed, I'd imagine. Having to move another coach on, it's sad news for the coach, the organisation and the stability.

"They (the board) have made a decision and now they have to run with it, but it's probably a step backwards.

"They think it's a step forward to move on to a new coach. JT's knowledge of the game is quite good but, obviously, it wasn't good enough for the board.

"This isn't good for the game or for a guy who has moved the club forward a little in some aspects. It never takes just a small amount of time to get your roster right. It probably takes a few years.

"He has had a little bit of leverage and has moved the team forward in terms of the roster but, in other ways, it's probably fallen away.

"I do feel for him. The fans just want their team to do well. For this to be happening, in a multimillion-dollar organisation, it's so sad."

Taylor now joins Potter and Tim Sheens as coaches to be sacked by the club since 2012.

Asked whether the coaching carnage had to end, Potter said: "You'd like to think it would end with whoever the next coach is.

"You'd like to see a stable coach come in and a good, well-respected coach. Ivan Cleary is out there somewhere. I haven't got a clue who they are looking at but I'm sure they are looking at someone quite senior that would be the prime candidate."

Asked how he would describe the decision to punt Taylor, Potter said: "I've got a strong word for it but I will try and soften it. It just creates more instability.

"Your organisation is never going to be stable until you have a good tenure with your senior management.

"I thought when the club got the independent board they would be far, far better. I thought it would give them credibility and strength. Maybe I gave them too much credit."

Tigers assistant coach Andrew Webster will be the interim head coach. He has previously worked with the New Zealand Warriors.
