Teen boy raped by man with HIV is unable to join navy

A TEENAGE boy missed out on joining the navy after he revealed he had been raped by a man with the HIV virus.

The 16-year-old Brisbane teen had to disclose he was waiting for tests to see if he had been infected after a sleepover at a friend's house playing x-box games in October, 2010, changed his life forever.

The 38-year-old man, who drugged him and held a knife to his throat to stop him screaming, was sentenced to 11.5 years in jail when he faced Brisbane District Court on Friday.

He has been declared a serious violence offender which means he must serve 80% of his sentence.

Judge Deborah Richards said the sexual assaults and rape "callous and brazen and prolonged".

She said the man drugged the boy with isobutyl nitrate - a drug commonly used in the homosexual community to help anal sex - which made him dizzy and drowsy.

"There was no effort made to protect him from contracting the disease," she said.

"It showed callous and deliberate disregard for his health."

The teen was unable to finish Year 12 after the trauma of the crime, could not enter the navy and is now suffering psychological problems.

The sentence came the same day the Court of Appeal handed down a decision dismissing the man's appeal against convictions, which were delivered after a trial in May.
