Police investigating Terranora Country Club blaze

Update, October 14, 4.20pm: TWEED Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the Terranora Lakes Country Club fire on October 7.

Anyone with information about the blaze should call CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

Update, October 9, 1.18pm: A WITNESS has come forward claiming he saw suspicious activity around the Terranora Lakes Country Club before the fire broke out.

Michael Houting was walking to his friend's house near the club when he noticed some strange activity.

"My friend and I were up around there and we saw some guys with backpacks and stuff hanging around there about 1.30am," he said.

"We saw them pulling the fence up and climbing under and we put two and two together.

"I think it was definitely deliberate."

This comes after Tweed Fire Brigade said residents reported cars doing burnouts at the club about 3.30am.

Fire Brigade deputy captain Dave Shields speculated someone "may have tossed a match in or something like that".

Tweed Police, who are tasked with fire investigations, were unavailable for comment.

Update, October 8, 3.46pm: TWEED Police do not believe the Terranora Country Club fire was deliberately lit, despite Tweed Fire Brigade's early assumption.

Tweed Byron LAC detective inspector Brendon Cullen said he could not confirm how the fire started at this stage.

"Nothing that I've seen shows that it is suspicious," he said.

Police could not clarify further, but it appears investigations will continue to determine the cause of the fire.

Initial Report, October 7, 11.11am: TERRANORA Lakes Country Club was basked in a screen of thick smoke and flames early this morning and Tweed Fire Brigade say it could have been deliberately lit.

Tweed Heads Fire Brigade deputy captain Dave Shields said two Tweed trucks, one Banora Point truck and a HAZMAT team were called out to the fire.

"We got the call at 5.30am this morning and it was going strong at the back of the golf club," Capt Shields said.

"A few residents were around and saw people were up there doing burnouts at around 3.30am. They may have tossed a match in or something like that.

"The fire was under control by about 6.30pm."

The derelict club had already been gutted by fire in November 2010.

No one was injured in the fire.
