Pacific Hwy upgrade racing ahead with Ballards Rd bridge open

THE Ballards Rd interchange bridge across the Pacific Hwy has opened while work continues on its approaches, with screens and barriers being installed as part of the Nambucca Heads to Urunga upgrade.

The changed traffic conditions mean motorists using Ballards Rd will be directed onto the new structure which was started last April.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said the bridge had eight concrete piles placed 20m deep supporting the main structure.

"A total of 10 girders weighing 50 tonnes each and 32 metres in length were built offsite at Macksville pre-cast yard and installed last year, with more than 600 cubic metres of concrete also used during building work," the spokesperson said.

The bridge opening marks a milestone in the project which has enjoyed fast progress, in part because of the greenfields nature of the majority of the construction area.

The spokesperson said motorists should still plan for potential short delays when using roads in the area because changed traffic conditions remain in place and reduced speed limits are posted.

"The Nambucca Heads to Urunga community information and display centre is located on Ballards Rd and open 9am to 5pm.

We encourage you to visit the project team to learn more about the upgrade and provide any feedback," the spokesperson said.

"To date more than 600 visitors have already made their way to the display centre by following the signs to the main site compound."
