The best of Witchmount wines

WITCHMOUNT Estate came to prominence when their 2004 Shiraz won the 2008 Syrah Du Monde prize in France against some pretty stiff competition.

Not bad for a smallish winery in the Sunbury region, located just 30 minutes from Melbourne CBD.

Sunbury is the birth place of The Ashes and shiraz has been grown there since the first plantings in the 1860s.

Witchmount C.S.P Field Blend

2015: A blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris. Unique nose of honeycomb, pear, jasmine, almond, cardboard and candle wax.

Flavours blur between savoury and sweet overtones: Citrusy guava melts away to salted jersey caramel. Textural and toothsome; with spice, grip and soft nutty qualities. More a "left field blend" that works well.

Rating: 8.5/10 RRP: $21 Alc: 12.5%

Witchmount Pinot Gris

2015: Extended contact with the grape skins give a young onion-skin colour to the wine. Rich and ripe nose of brown pear skin, rosewater, ginger and fennel seed spice.

Has a strange dessert-wine like quality, almost red fruit and pavlova flavours firstly, followed by succulent and crisp brown pear slices. Plenty of grip and length. Certainly food friendly, try with Crispy Chinese Pork Belly.

Rating: 8/10 RRP: $21 Alc: 13.5%

Witchmount Shiraz

2013: Sweet and fruity red fruit nose balanced with leafy cabbage and cedary oak giving a nutty tone whilst there's some animalistic, meaty/fresh leather complexity and stewing rhubarb.

Full bodied, this has licorice spice to help along dark berries and red currants. Graphite minerality pushed out of the way with dark oak and grippy tannins.

A marked point of Shiraz difference.

Rating: 8.5/10 RRP: $32 Alc: 14.5%
