The future of resources

THE future of the region's resource and agriculture industry was the hot topic when ANZ Australia's institutional managing director Nigel Williams met with business people at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre this morning.

"We need to get away from the idea that we are going to have a boom-bust in resources and agriculture industries," Mr Williams said.

There had been a shift in global economies and areas like America and Europe, which used to dominate the global economy, were now being replaced by third-world countries in South East Asia and Africa, he said.

"Some of these countries will soon go from being quite poor to economically strong.

"By the end of this decade there will be 1.2 billion middle class.

"Sugar and resource industries have the potential to export their produce to help fill the middle class's demand."
