The heat is on: Mick Fanning’s bid for surfing world title

YOU could cut the air with a knife on the beach at the Billabong Pipe Masters yesterday.

Such was the tension as 11 time world champion Kelly Slater and Tweed Heads Mick Fanning get closer to a showdown at the famous Hawaiian reef break.

Fanning made things harder for himself after finishing last in his round four heat against Hawaiian superstar John Florence and rookie of the year Nat Young.

This means a tuff round five knock out heat against the experienced former world champ CJ Hopgood.

Meanwhile Slater cruised to victory in his round four heat and went directly to the quarter finals, putting the pressure on Fanning to win in his round five clash.

In the last heat of the day Tweed's current world champ Joel Parkinson was all smiles after posting a 9.27 to cruise straight into the quarter finals.

With the competition looking set to finish tomorrow all eyes will be on the first few heats of the day.
