The Shire 'nothing like Jersey Shore'

ONE of the stars of Channel 10's controversial new series The Shire says it's not an Aussie Jersey Shore.

Stonemason Mitch Dean is one of six twenty-somethings at the centre of the new "dramality" series filmed in Sydney's Sutherland Shire.

After strong opposition from the local community, including Shire mayor Carol Provan, the show was initially bumped from Ten's schedule.

But the network has changed tack and rushed production so the The Shire will now premiere on Monday.

"It's nothing like Jersey Shore," Dean said.

"It's at the totally different end of the spectrum. That's the reason I signed up for it."

The 23-year-old hopes the show will win over the residents who opposed it as well as debunk The Shire's "bad reputation".

"I've lived here all my life," he said.

"I truly believe it's one of the most beautiful places in the world, from the beaches to the national park that backs right on to it.

"It's got a great vibe to it and I think this is a great way to show The Shire is a nice place with normal, everyday people who love surfing ad playing sports."

Some of Dean's family members appear on the show, but not all of them were keen.

"My nan's first reaction was like 'oh no' but you know how nans are. They're the biggest worry pots," he said.

"My mum was up for it. She was excited for me."

The first few episodes will feature Dean's "awkward" reunion with ex-girlfriend Gabrielle, 20, who also stars on the show.

"Gabby and I went out with for three and a half years. It was my longest relationship, my first love," he said.

"The first couple of episodes were really awkward. We hadn't spoken in six months.

"But straight away, as soon as we hung out again it was a huge weight off my shoulders."

The Shire debuts on Monday at 8pm on Ten.
