The Summer that Melted Everything
THE wonderful names of characters in this book had me from the start. A broken old man, Fielding Bliss, tells of his childhood in the little town of Breathed, Ohio, where his father Autopsy Bliss - the town prosecutor - places an ad in the local paper inviting the devil to come to Breathed.
Enter Sal, a little boy full of mysteries, who says he is the fallen angel Lucifer and who bears scars on his back as if wings had indeed been cut from him. Sal becomes Fielding's best friend and a member of his family, telling poetical parables and offering chances of redemption again and again. But why is the older Fielding so damaged?
The journey paved with pain and wet with tears. McDaniel's evocative writing is rich with allegory and lyrical power.
