Bound, gagged and allegedly kidnapped: man's lucky escape

DETECTIVES have charged three men over an alleged assault and kidnapping which ended in a man's lucky escape on the Pacific Hwy near Valla yesterday.

Police were called to the location after the man was found bound and gagged on Wednesday around 11.30am. 

The 36-year-old man was taken to Coffs Harbour Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

Police have been told he was tied up, threatened with a firearm and assaulted after meeting with a group of men at Urunga.

The group then allegedly set the man's car on fire and placed him in the back of a utility and drove from the scene.

Police said he managed to escape at Valla.

Coffs Clarence officers commenced inquiries into the incident and arrested two men at Bellingen about 1pm yesterday.

The men - aged 36 and 32 - were taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where they were charged with special aggravated kidnapping and malicious damage by fire.

They both appeared at Coffs Harbour Local Court today where they were refused bail to reappear on December 10.

Following further inquiries, a 36-year-old man was arrested at Toormina today about 9am. 

He was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with the same offences and bail refused to appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court.
