Thirsty Santas to hit fund-raising trail

FOR the eighth time since 2005 Grafton's streets will be crawling with Santa Clauses looking for a drink this afternoon.

The annual Grafton Santa Crawl will begin at 1pm today at the Crown Hotel on the riverbank at Grafton

The tradition has grown since 13 friends dressed up in Santa gear in 2005 for a tour of local pubs.

Last year Santas were joined by elves, reindeer and Santa's helpers.

All in all, 1200 revellers succeeded in raising $10,000 for their nominated charity, St Vinnies.

Today's action begins at the Crown Hotel and participants are encouraged to call into each of the other three major hotel sponsors, Roches, The Jacaranda and The Clocktower at their own pace.

"Each of these pubs have contributed significantly to the charity to be a part of this event,'' organiser Adam Crawley said.

Doors at the Grafton Racecourse open at 4pm.

Entertainment there is by Dan Tuite, Ben Francis Band and DJs Skinny Z, Sinka and Jimmy Opendoors.

"It's become a kind of reunion - we've got people coming from Melbourne, Cairns, Townsend and from the mines in WA," Mr Crawley said.
