Three foreign nationals nabbed working illegally

THREE more foreign nationals have been nabbed allegedly working illegally in Stanthorpe's horticulture industry.

This is in addition to seven detained after a major raid by immigration officers a fortnight ago.

Stanthorpe Police Acting Senior Sergeant Damien Grace said three Malaysian men had been found in a local pub last Thursday after police received information from members of the public.

"Police were called to attend a local hotel where three Malaysian nationals were identified and detained," Acting Snr Sgt Grace said.

"Upon checks being conducted by police at Stanthorpe station, it was confirmed that all three were in Australia illegally.

"They were handed over to immigration authorities who are dealing with the matter."

A Canberra spokesman for the Department of Immigration yesterday confirmed the three men had been transported to Sydney's Villawood Detention Centre.

They would be deported promptly.

"People are detained for two reasons," the spokesman said.

"Either they are working illegally on a current tourist visa.

"Or they are working illegally and have also overstayed their visa and are in the country unlawfully, which is the case here," he said.

"It is understood these persons were working in the horticulture sector locally."
