Tigers get mauled by Breakers

THE first game of the season finally arrived for the under-13/14 Westlawn Tigers and Yamba Breakers on Saturday.

Numbers for this season were not going to be a problem with two players returning from season-ending injuries last year, and three new players.

Despite a squad of 15 for Westlawn, the Breakers claimed a 6-1 triumph. The match was always going to prove to be a tough assignment against last year’s minor and major premiers Yamba.

The first 15 minutes of the match was all Yamba, slotting two quick goals. Tigers were forced to do a mountain of defending in the first quarter with the majority of the game being played in their own half.

The backline was kept busy with Adam Pryor at sweeper repelling numerous Yamba raids. The second quarter was a complete turnaround with the Tigers enjoying much more possession.

Ben Zietsch, playing in the midfield, threaded some great through balls through the Yamba defence to set up a number of chances. However the breakthrough came with three minutes remaining in the half.

The speedy Sam Powell made a blistering run from right back to score a very impressive individual goal. Tigers were right back in the game, going in at half time only trailing by the solitary goal.

The second half started as the first ended with the Tigers enjoying the majority of play. With the Tigers unable to convert their chances, the Breakers began to find the form they started the match with.

They started stringing their passes together and everything started working for them. As the Tigers started to tire, Yamba took their opportunities, scoring another four goals and showing the form that won them the title last year.

The standout performer for the Tigers was Adam Pryor, who was tireless in defence. Tayla Whalen was also very impressive for her first game, showing great determination.

Although beaten, all the kids can be proud of their efforts with many positives coming out of the game.

They are looking forward to the season ahead.
