SAILING: Tight sailing in regatta

BIG River Sailing Club met variable wind and weather conditions in yet another highly successful regatta on the weekend.

The longer passage race downstream on the Clarence River towards Goodwood Island and to Iluka for the faster boats was sailed in the customary summer southeaster that picked up somewhat round the bend and into the straight heading towards Iluka, whipping up some wave action.

Sunday proved to be a waiting game - waiting for wind. The pre-lunch race was postponed providing extra time for the sailors to enjoy the great food provided by the hardworking Jan Carlin and her team of volunteers in the canteen.

Once the moderate southeaster filled in the afternoon, races around the buoys in front of the clubhouse were started. However, not long after the start a small storm passed by dousing the breeze.

Race Two of the afternoon was a sedate affair and sailors waited again for the southeaster to pick up after the storm had passed.

Racing was closely contested in the seven divisions. This year we had good representation in the junior division. They sailed their own course and had a lot of fun in the process. Andy Landenberger came out on top in the Junior Division.

In the open 'Fast Cats' division Andrew Landenberger who had taken time out from his overseas sailing and coaching activities took first place to make it a double success for Team Landenberger.

In the 'Not Quite So Fast Cats' division Phil Robbins grabbed first position.

Richmond River SC has had a long history of supporting Big River in its regattas and Mike Wiley from Ballina topped the Fast Monos. In the Monohulls Aaron Hunt from Tweed nabbed the honours in his Corsair. The Sports Trailable Yachts division saw Gunter Heuchmer from Richmond River pick up top position.

Rob White was in a class of his own in his Hartley 16 and would really like to have more competition in future. If you have a Hartley that is not seeing much action, please come to Big River to give Rob some competition.

This wraps up the regattas for the sailing season but club sailing will continue until Easter when the season finishes.
