Tightest finish in final of 30m
THE penultimate round of competition with the Grafton Services Swimming Club was held on Tuesday evening and the anticipation is now building towards the presentation night to be held on Saturday, April 30 when award-recipients will be revealed.
The final night of competition will be held next Tuesday followed by a barbecue at the GDSC.
The first final this week was the 50m freestyle and was contested by Toni Ensbey, David Moon, Anne Simkus, Damien O'Mahoney and Terry Barnes.
The girls thought they had the situation under control and were very confident of claiming the quinella but alas the judge, coincidentally a male, had different ideas.
The decision to disqualify both girls was an easy decision when they broke their times by a big margin leaving Marno in first place followed by Moony and happy Sharks supporter Barnesy.
The 30m freestyle final saw one of the closest finishes of the year with only 0.06 seconds separating the first three swimmers.
When the photo-finish came through Ian Davis was declared the winner from Max Kroehnert and Richard Sear with Geoff Simkus and David Moon following.
Luckily the judge had a magnifying glass to study the photo such was the close margin.
The feature event was the 30m formstroke for the Wykes Tyrepower Cup.
Bob Owen, Terry Marsh, Geoff Simkus, Bill Goddard and Julie Kearns wound themselves up to try to claim the final major trophy for the summer season.
Julie took the prize after Bob, Marshy, the second of the only two Sharks supporters known to exist, and Billy G. were rubbed out for speeding.
A lesson can be learnt with Julie holding back and swimming over her time to take the win from a tiring Chicko.
