Time runs out for beached rare beaked whale

A RARE beaked whale has been euthanised after failed attempts to rescue it from a beach on the NSW South Coast.

The young 3.75m mammal was stranded in shallow water at Mystics Beach near Kiama.

Rescuers worked through the day to try to save the animal, but it returned and beached itself after they carried it out to sea on a stretcher.

An autopsy will be conducted.
